Interesting and new on the local level is different than interesting and new on the national level. Keep in mind that the goal of just about every media relations consultant/employee is to do what you just outlined, so you have to stand out significantly to get attention.

News is new, so make sure you have something new to say that goes beyond marketing/ PR spin. News is also human - you need to have a real, human and emotional story to tell. News media love "triumph over adversity" or "rags to riches" types of stories. Because news is human, your business needs to be too. When talking to/ pitching reporters don't try to go for the hard sell. Make your story personal, accessible and inspiring.
