Great question with a complex answer. Your company, represented by your business name/logo/slogan/etc, is a valuable asset. Therefore, steps to familiarize yourself with the concept of trademarking intellectual property should not be overlooked. I recommend a quick read of an old reference material exactly on this topic. Feel free to Google search "Winning with Trademarks". This document is authored by a trademark attorney who used to be affiliated with the Rich Dad / Poor Dad group.

Not only can it be expensive, it can be expensive when it is not done correctly. As an attorney who focuses on trademark, copyright, advertising and promotion law, one issue can affect many different topics. Is your trademark one that promises and makes claims? I had a client who had to change the mark because it violated advertising laws. Many different issues can appear - other than, "Someone else is using my trademark."
