Very important, in the early stages of a web startup you are going to have (for the sake of argument) 90% of the people kicking the tires and 10% of people actually interested. Those 10% are going to be early adopters, people who love to be engaged and around new products and businesses, this is your chance to make them evangalists and to build in a sense of product ownership. Peer judgement and word of mouth are very powerful marketing tools!!!!

It is a double-edged sword. If it works, it will be great and your company will climb the ladder of success easily and if it does not, you will lose all your credibility all of a sudden.

It depends, on the quality and kind of product you offer through the website. For instance, look at Mint.com (you may have read it on this same site already) that created a buzz and then interest. So, if your potential customers are expecting some thing different and/or new and your website would meet most of their expectations, customers would tend to follow-up on your website development and be happy to provide you a feedback or review. Their interest in your product-offering would definitely bring them back to your website automatically, because they need your product-offering. For example, I am offering a product called 'ABC' which is innovative or has been waiting for in the consumer market, so the promise of such product delivery through my website would create interest in customer base and bring customers back again and checking the website/product development or a trial buy, or other offerings they are expecting in a customer perspective.
