  • How can we evaluate the ROI on our social media activity?

    • Dev Basu

There’s been a lot written on the topic but I can boil it down relatively simply as follows:

      1. Use URL tagging via Google Analytics url builder http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55578

You can also use HootSuites campaign builder if you’re using Twitter as one of your main social media mediums.

      1. Run your campaigns, promotions, or social engagements.

      2. Place conversion tracking code on your thank you page (for downloads, sales, etc) and assign lead and conversion values appropriately.

      3. Run reports and break down by social media campaign results.

  • How do you overcome the challenges of marketing a website when you have limited budget and tons of competitors? i.e. we are a local deals site.

  • what are some tips for building your startup wensite? should you always outsource the project?

    • Dev Basu

You don’t need to outsource the project if you have resources in-house. This means having both the time, and the expertise to work on different aspects of your website.

Key areas to focus on are:

      1. Usability and Site Design
      2. Site Architecture for Search Engine Friendliness
      3. Content and Call To Actions.
      4. Focus on Conversions.
      5. A Planned approach to measuring traffic, visitor events, and conversion data.

Follow lean startup principles and just get your initial website out there, and start building up a list of users till you get to your launch.

  • After watching @garryvee on several videos he makes the point that marketing is changing from push to pull. Actually engaging on social media, listening to and responding to your customers in the places they like to hang out online. Since there are so many places that people hang out online, would a service that aggregates these people and lets you search for individuals and pockets of people that would be interested in your product be a worthwhile problem to solve?

    • Dev Basu

I think it’s a problem that many social media ‘intelligence’ tools are already well on the way to solving. Tools like Sproutsocial, Ubervu, Syncapse, and Radian6 are built to separate signal from noise found on many different social media channels and platforms. There is still tons of opportunity to come in and capture your own niche in this space. Think about specializing in specific industry verticals (eg: Social Media for Hotels) vs trying to capture a generic market.

  • We manage Google Adwords account for local small business clients. When the client has an existing but poorly-optimized account we're able to make changes and see performance improve very quickly. However, when we create a new Adwords account for a client it takes a lot longer to get impressions/clicks due to low initial QS and high initial bid requirements. Do you have any tips on shortening the Adwords "ramp-up" period for new accounts?

    • Dev Basu

Quality Score is largely a function of High CTR (Click Thru Rate), Bid Keyword to Ad Text fit, and Landing Page fit. Assuming you have an appropriate bidding strategy and account structure, as well as good landing pages, the best way to ramp up initial account level QS is to bid on keywords where you will achieve a position of #1-#3 and which have the highest probability of achieving a high CTR. Hint: Bid on your own branded keywords for cheap clicks that convert very well and have exponentially higher CTRs than the rest of your ad groups.

  • How important is creating content in driving traffic to my site?

    • Dev Basu

Content is like the pillar upon which the rest of your online marketing is built. You can’t do well without it and any online effort, SEO or otherwise will be useless without good content. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10.

  • We have a web service business. How can we compare our membership growth with our competitors?

    • Dev Basu

I’m assuming you have a SaaS business? I would look at competitive insight tools like:

      • Quantcast
      • Compete
      • Google Trends
      • Google Insights (type in your competitor’s domain)

You could also use site:domain.com type searches in Google and crawl the number of new member pages being generated on your competitors site. This would give you an indication of their member growth rate (assuming they have good SEO and 100% of their member pages get indexed).
